Episode Notes

In this episode I rant about College Football and some much needed changes and why I think they will be helpful.  I feel pretty good about these, maybe the NCAA is listening... unlikely.

Also announce the big news about a new Podcast I will be doing and I am really excited about that.  Overall just so happy to be back doing the show and with the new format!

Show Notes:

Ten conferences:

AAC - American Athletic Conference

Notable teams: Cincinnati, UCF, Navy, and Temple

ACC- Atlantic Coast Conference

Clemson and Wake Forest

Big 12

Oklahoma State, Texas

Big Ten

Michigan, Ohio State

Conference USA

Southern Miss and Utep.

Mid American conference

Mountain West

Boise State, UNLV, Airforce

Pac-12

Oregon, Utah, Stanford.

SEC

Georgia, Alabama, LSU

Sunbelt

App state, Texas state…

And you have the independent teams outside a conference

Notre Dame for instance…

And out of those ten you have what's called the Power five conferences. That includes the SEC, BIG Ten, ACC, PAC12, and Big 12.

Propose 11 team eliminations that include all conference champions and one independent or wild card team. We could go 10 teams and exclude the independents and force them into a conference…

Reasons why this works:

Every conference has a fair shake at the title.  This is good for recruiting and the school's exposure.  Think of an upset game where a non power 5 wins over a power 5 school.

Many instances in the past (UCF) where lesser schools were undefeated and did not have a chance to go to the playoffs.

More opportunities for interesting and enjoyable match ups… it's not a secret the last several years of playoffs have been a snoozer and very lopsided.  The average scoring was 21-1

There are many reasons for this… certainly talented teams are one but the large gap in time where teams play (a month) does not help anyone.  Alabama does not need a month to prepare for Cincinnati… However, that month-long gap could be a momentum killer for teams like Michigan who were on a season high after beating Ohio and winning the big ten…

More teams means a higher likelihood for more entertaining games, better match ups and while the outcomes could be the same (Alabama in the natty) there would be more enjoyable ball for the fans and more cash for the cougars pockets.. Everyone wins

Besides, who would not want more football?  The players don't protest because frankly it's a couple more games, nothing unusual as most of those teams will more than likely be in a bowl game anyway.

The schools get more exposure which means more money and more students! After all, college football is a recruiting tool for the school right? Right….

NBC and ESPN have more content! Winning

And let's face it a four team play off is a snoozer, especially when the power 5 is really no longer in regards to conferences and really just five teams… Alabama, Georgia, Ohio state, Clemson, and wild card we can throw in there from time to time… usually Oklahoma

These teams constantly recruit the best talent in the NCAA and why not. They have made a name for themselves over the last ten years, especially Alabama.  I'm not sure Saban really has to try any more when it comes to recruiting…

Offering a spot in the playoffs for every conference means every team in the FBS has a shot at the natty… this is great for lesser schools who struggle to recruit top tier talent because let's face it a four and five star athlete wants to go where he can be seen and win big… and for the longest time teams like Cincinnati would never be on that top four list… they had to have two great seasons to finally make it there….

And while yes the outcome for cin wasn't great it will still expose to that program who may now be able to pick up more three and four star athletes who otherwise would never start at say Ohio state…

This set up raises the recruiting tide for all ships and over time could bring a nice balance to the force and bring back some diversity in the top five programs…

Maybe not either.. But we have to do something because the predictability of outcomes for college football is getting insane… never have we seen such dynasties built to be God like giants.

Instead of hoping a coach retires let's try to level the playing field in other ways.. This will do that. Sure many will get smashed but who cares.  That's one more hurdle for an Alabama team to win over to get to the natty.  And ask Texas A&M about Alabama and hurdles….

Any given team any given day.  This will shake it up big time!

Now sure you could ask why not just the top ten ranked teams… simple.  You should have to win your conference overall to prove you can be a national champion.

In no other sport can a team lose their division or conference and still be a champion.. At least that I know of.

This will also eliminate potential repeat games.  Like the one we will be privy to this monday… OH BOY we get to see Alabama and Georgia face off again YAWN.

And if my prediction is right and Alabama lays a smackdown on them it will prove the point that we don't need repeats like this.

Sure I get it Michigan should have won, Or cinn and they didn't. Fair enough but maybe notre dame wins over Georgia who knows… but the fact is this

You now have a team who lost to alabama and did not win the conference potentially going to win a national title over alabama which means now both teams have lost to each other once this year, does not prove the best team one… just shows there's little consistency in sports when two teams on equal levels play each other.

Play these two teams against each other 12 times in a year and I bet you Georgia will win 60% of those games….

My point? Well Georgia had their chance in the SEC championship they didn't win. It sucks but Alabama did so they should move on, so college football fans don't have to watch the same game played again… this can't be good for ratings.

Conference champions means no repeats, at least for the most part.  There are non conference games that could cause a repeat.  Though these happen usually in September so it won't be as bad as say the conference championship like the SEC…

No repeats, all teams have a chance to win, better recruiting, more entertaining, no extended breaks! New year's eve four game playoffs will still work!

This is a win win for every fan out there.

We want fairness as much as possible, some balance and most of all good football

Yes your team may have the perfect season, and lose the conference championship game… that's a bummer. It could happen. But thats football

We see this in all sports when it's the best of seven playoff formats…
